Extended warranties questioned

Nearly everything we buy today comes with a sales pitch to buy an extended warranty. The practice has even invaded the cleaning industry with programs for spot removal, carpet protector and traffic lane maintenance. Several national publications recently cast doubt on the value of extended warranties.

The articles warn of harsh upselling tactics used by salespeople and declare that consumers are better off taking a chance on the regular warranty. A repair or service under the extended plan usually costs about the same as the cost of the additional warranty and generally warranties are invoked before they expire.

It's nice to see writers of national renown beginning to opine on the subject. Extended warranties have never been offered in our own service company in Indianapolis. I'm very pleased that I've never written about offering extended warranties in the cleaning industry or suggested that students in our school use them.
