SMALL BUSINESSES

Small Business Statistics

Most businesses start out as Mom & Pop enterprises. These are for statistical purposes referred to as “Small Businesses”.

Most estimates have the number of these approaching 29 million. Which is over 99% of all business enterprises. They employ almost 57 million people which is 47% for all businesses.

Most of these businesses will remain as Mom & Pop enterprises. Which was the original intent of the owner(s). Still others will grow and expand. Some of this is by design, other times it is by filling a niche need.

So as this business expands it will need employees beyond the principles. Subsequently, if that growth continues beyond a handful of employees, then managers will be needed along with various others to fill roles that the original owners were filling.

The owner(s) of this business, in order to be successful, will need to carefully select from the current group of employees or by hiring from the outside a manager. This is necessary because of the growth (expansion) of the business. This person will become an understudy to the owner(s). This will allow the principles time to train others. Also, they will have time to think outside the normal daily needs and expectations of the business. This will allow them the opportunity to call upon other people and businesses. These contacts may provide them with the tools and knowledge to further expand and grow their “Small Business”.

PERFORMANCE REVIEWS

Most managers or owners will admit they don’t like to do performance reviews because in many cases they have to criticize their employees.

As unenviable as this task is, it is imperative that it is done periodically to improve all of the employees performances. This will ultimately improve the performance of the company and therefore make the company more successful.

The majority of the employees reviews will include mostly positive comments and appraisals. There obviously will be some where there are negative statements expressed. For those where there are negative appraisals, try this tact. Always begin the interview with positive comments, then move to the negative comments and finally end the interview with one or two positive comments.

The last words of an interview will have a lot to do with whether or not the employee leaves in a positive frame of mind. This obviously will also avoid ending the performance reviews on a sour note. This way, in virtually every case, the employee will exit the interview with a desire to improve their performance.

WEAKNESS

While many feel it’s a positive trait, still others feel it’s a negative trait. What are we talking about? It’s the person who is trying to juggle many projects or requests at the same time.

It has been called a blessing or a curse, some even call it a weakness. Bluntly more than not, it’s a curse. When attempting to accomplish multiple tasks, it scatters effort and direction. On many occasions, many solutions are tried before the right one is chosen. At that point, it is deemed the best way when in reality it may have been the only choice left.

So what is the answer? Don’t be reluctant to work on multiple projects or tasks at the same time. The key is prioritizing them and then focus on each one until it’s accomplished, then move on to the next one.

By doing this, a weakness becomes a strength.

ANNIVERSARY

Bane-Clene Corp.® will celebrate our 60th Anniversary - February 4th, 2022

We will presume you know the story of how a small start up Janitorial Service morphed into what we are today.

An International Manufacturer and Supplier of Cleaning Equipment, Chemicals and Accessories.

We don’t have to tell you that being in business has its trials and tribulations.

However, more importantly, it has its many rewards for which we are thankful.
