STAFF

Being an owner, manager, supervisor, etc. is easier when you have staff that works hard, follows operating procedures and genuinely care about their jobs.

But what can be done, if whom you have does not fit the bill or you can’t find new people to join your company to accomplish your goals?

Above all, do not complain about the situation in front of the staff. This alienates those that are fitting the bill. Also, it will not improve the attitudes and performance of those who are not doing their job to the standards that are expected.

Different strategies should be taken depending on your position in the Company. If there are multiple owners, then a meeting should be called to discuss alternatives. If you are the sole owner of the Company, you could meet with a trusted Advisor. If you are not the owner of the Company, then go to the owner(s) or your immediate boss and discuss the situation. Whichever scenario your situation fits any discussions certainly needs to be done privately.

After you have stated your case, listen to what is being said. Your boss, other owners or an Advisor are going to have their opinions and ideas. If you felt it necessary to discuss the situation, then once again you want to listen to what they have to say.

Attracting new help willing to work is extremely difficult especially in these current times. So the obvious course of action is to work with existing staff. Your first step is to review with your staff what they perceive their duties to be and what do they do to accomplish them. After that information is gathered, you will know what needs to be done. Do you need to start over with training and procedures? Or is it just a matter of tweaking what is being done and how?

No matter what course you take, be cheerful and encouraging. Above all, be patient, realize that there will probably be some errors or missteps. If your staff is striving to do their best, then acknowledge that effort, even if they are not doing it exactly as you would like. Recognizing and appreciating their effort will encourage them to strive to do even better.

Anyone can be a good “boss” when they have excellent staff to work with. The true test is what can be accomplished when the present staff is not as good as they need to be.

SUCCESS

What is success?

Common definitions are: “the accomplishment of an aim, goal or purpose” and or “the good outcome of an undertaking by engaging in a certain tactic or position”.

Success has many ways to be achieved and described. To different people it has different meanings or levels.

To a business owner, it is the setting of a long range goal and striving to achieve it by working on it consistently.

To a manager, it is realizing when you have people who know their jobs and assignments and are willing to take responsibility for those and you “stand aside” and let them accomplish those tasks.

To an employee, it is striving to work hard and therefore achieve a job well done and the satisfaction that brings.

For all of us, it is important to know what we ultimately want and to take the short range and ultimately long range steps to attain success.

LATENESS and ABSENTEEISM

These are two of the biggest issues for any Company. Obviously it may be worse in a small Company because there are fewer employees to pick up the slack. However, it still causes headaches in all size of companies.

When employees are late or absent, adjustments must be made to schedules at the last minute. These changes are potentially costly and inefficient. While lateness and absenteeism are inevitable, there are tactics that can be done to minimize the problem.

Be sure all personnel appreciate and understand the problems lateness and absenteeism create. Impress upon them that these actions affect the entire team. When anyone is late or absent, they are letting the others down. Impress upon each person how much they are counted on as a team member. People who feel appreciated and wanted are less apt to be late or absent.

Whatever position you hold in a Company, whether it be the owner, manager or supervisor, it is imperative you practice what you preach. Regular hours set a good example for everyone. Also, all employees should be treated equally. Don’t allow someone to circumvent the “rules” because they are considered more valuable. This will backfire. Everyone feels better about complying when they know everyone is being treated equally.

If excessive lateness and absenteeism continue to be an issue, then look for reasons. Do employees feel that they are unchallenged or the job is boring? Look into ways to minimize or eliminate these or any other reasons.

It might be considered naive to think that lateness and absenteeism can be completely eliminated, but it is possible to have an approach that keeps them to a minimum. Doing this will help the Company obtain greater success and better profits.

CONVERSATIONALIST

What defines a good conversationalist?

Here are some do’s and don’ts.

Don’t tell humorous or serious stories about someone or something unless you are certain the person or group you are conversing with would approve. However, it would be acceptable if someone else had already done so.

Don’t endeavor to start a protracted conversation with someone who is obviously busy or in a rush. However, it would be acceptable to inquire when might be an appropriate time for you to engage them in a lengthy conversation.

Don’t inject conversation about yourself while conversing with others. It is rude and projects the idea that you are more important than the person with whom you’re speaking.

Don’t discuss the plot, ending or important points of a movie, book, TV show, etc. unless you know the person has already seen or read it.

Don’t talk about a subject you know nothing about; it will only end up making you look foolish or worse yet ignorant.

Above all, never lose sight of the fact that other people will wish to have a chance to talk rather than listen.

Good conversationalists are cognizant of the fact that they have two ears and one mouth.
