FORGET

Normally when people forget it is considered to be bad or a failing. However, it can be said that the ability to forget is actually a sign of success

Successful people forget. They know that the past cannot be altered. However, they will not forget the bad things and will vow not to make mistakes again. They will also not forget the good things and will always try to repeat them.

Kind hearted people forget. They’re too big to sweat the little things and be disturbed by them. If anyone does them wrong, they consider the source and remain calm. They realize that it is only small people who seek revenge.

Successful people realize that in life as well as in business, it is sometimes better and wiser to forget and move forward. Dwelling in the past gets people no where fast.

CARING BOSSES

Caring Bosses are like good mechanics specializing in people. A good mechanic doesn’t wait for their equipment to break down before they repair it. Instead, they keep it well maintained and working efficiently.

Therefore, Caring Bosses know how to keep people energized and working effectively. They are always alert for signs of trouble or strain. They will notice when someone is not doing their job correctly. They will work with them before the situation becomes a serious problem that might affect the Company or others.

People need attention the way equipment needs to be maintained. This attention should be systematic and done periodically through performance reviews or general observation. Attention makes people feel needed and appreciated. It will help them work to their potential and get more satisfaction from their work.

When things are running smoothly, some bosses have a tendency to relax and ignore people. That is obviously the time problems are more than likely to develop. To say that Caring Bosses can never relax is not true; however, they should stay observant.

Caring Bosses become Smart Bosses when they appreciate that fact every day.

REGRET

We recently had an employee leave our employment due to retirement. There was regret on the part of both parties. Why was there regret?

The employee had been with us for an extended period of time. So at this junction of time, they were considered more than an employee, they were a “friend”.

The “friend” had been a credit not only to us but to them-self. They had always worked hard and been very dedicated. If given a project, they would take charge of it. They would consider possible changes and or improvements. They were not reluctant to share these thoughts. So many times, employees will not share information.

This “friend” was a person of solid character. This character manifested itself due in part to their lineage which was built on a strong committed family with great integrity and morals beyond reproach. This character was then imparted to everyone in the Company which made the Company stronger.

They are entering retirement because they wish to spend more time with their children and grandchildren. They certainly cannot be faulted for this, however there will be regret for us and them

For them, the regret of leaving a satisfying career and for us the regret in loosing a valuable “friend”.

BONES

In the beginning, an organization is usually struggling to get established. Once established and profitable, it can begin assembling parts to the organization or bones.

Eventually, for better or for worse, these bones fall into many categories.

Let’s examine the four main bones of most organizations.

  1. The wish-bones: They are the people in the organization keeping a low profile and wishing somebody will do something about a problem so they don’t have to be involved.
  2. The jaw-bones: They do all the talking pretending to be a problem solver. When in reality, they don’t do anything but talk a good game.
  3. The knuckle-bones: These are the people that knock everyone and everything. They bring nothing to the table.
  4. The back-bones: Finally, the heart and soul of the organization. They carry the brunt of the load. They volunteer to help rather than being asked. When needed, they put the organization on their backs and obviously will do the majority of the work.

COMPLICATED

Do you know someone who makes everything seem complicated? Are you that person? In other words, don’t make a mountain out of the proverbial mole hill.

The ability to express complicated ideas simply and clearly may seem like a gift. However, it can be quite simple.

First off, you need to take into account who you are talking to. Is it your employees, friends, family, peers or your boss?

If this is “just” talking, then keep it simple and to the point. Don’t try to overwhelm people with big words or complex ideas or thoughts. This is a conversation not a presentation.

If you are making a prepared presentation, then it will be helpful to write a draft beforehand. After writing your draft, look at any complex, compound or otherwise long sentences. Is it possible to break them down into more simple sentences? Analyze particular words - are they necessary? Do they pertain to whom you will be communicating? Consider eliminating any words such as adjectives or adverbs that make your presentation more complicated but add nothing vital. Don’t interject “big” or non-essential words or phrases; instead of impressing them, you may end up alienating to whom you are talking.

Communicating, as with life in general, does not need to be complicated.

A MANAGER

Everyone is a manager. Some people manage businesses, others manage their homes but mostly people are a manager of themselves.

To be successful, a manager will occasionally make a mistake. Most mistakes they make, however, involve reasonable and perceived risks. The cost of failure, therefore, is not so great compared with that of the potential gain.

The goal of a manager is not to avoid all possible mistakes. That in itself is impossible. But the goal is to avoid mistakes that can be easily foreseen and therefore are not worth the cost. To that end, a manager will occasionally take reasonable and calculated risks to find out what is the best way to accomplish a goal. If they never try anything new, how can they improve their methods and results? Therefore, it realistically holds true that where there are no mistakes there is no progress.

Therefore, it realistically holds true that where there are no mistakes there is no progress. This underscores the fact that a manager is not trying potentially new approaches to the way they conduct business. Ultimately, these new ways could make the business much more successful and therefore more profitable.

SMALL BUSINESSES

Small Business Statistics

Most businesses start out as Mom & Pop enterprises. These are for statistical purposes referred to as “Small Businesses”.

Most estimates have the number of these approaching 29 million. Which is over 99% of all business enterprises. They employ almost 57 million people which is 47% for all businesses.

Most of these businesses will remain as Mom & Pop enterprises. Which was the original intent of the owner(s). Still others will grow and expand. Some of this is by design, other times it is by filling a niche need.

So as this business expands it will need employees beyond the principles. Subsequently, if that growth continues beyond a handful of employees, then managers will be needed along with various others to fill roles that the original owners were filling.

The owner(s) of this business, in order to be successful, will need to carefully select from the current group of employees or by hiring from the outside a manager. This is necessary because of the growth (expansion) of the business. This person will become an understudy to the owner(s). This will allow the principles time to train others. Also, they will have time to think outside the normal daily needs and expectations of the business. This will allow them the opportunity to call upon other people and businesses. These contacts may provide them with the tools and knowledge to further expand and grow their “Small Business”.

PERFORMANCE REVIEWS

Most managers or owners will admit they don’t like to do performance reviews because in many cases they have to criticize their employees.

As unenviable as this task is, it is imperative that it is done periodically to improve all of the employees performances. This will ultimately improve the performance of the company and therefore make the company more successful.

The majority of the employees reviews will include mostly positive comments and appraisals. There obviously will be some where there are negative statements expressed. For those where there are negative appraisals, try this tact. Always begin the interview with positive comments, then move to the negative comments and finally end the interview with one or two positive comments.

The last words of an interview will have a lot to do with whether or not the employee leaves in a positive frame of mind. This obviously will also avoid ending the performance reviews on a sour note. This way, in virtually every case, the employee will exit the interview with a desire to improve their performance.

WEAKNESS

While many feel it’s a positive trait, still others feel it’s a negative trait. What are we talking about? It’s the person who is trying to juggle many projects or requests at the same time.

It has been called a blessing or a curse, some even call it a weakness. Bluntly more than not, it’s a curse. When attempting to accomplish multiple tasks, it scatters effort and direction. On many occasions, many solutions are tried before the right one is chosen. At that point, it is deemed the best way when in reality it may have been the only choice left.

So what is the answer? Don’t be reluctant to work on multiple projects or tasks at the same time. The key is prioritizing them and then focus on each one until it’s accomplished, then move on to the next one.

By doing this, a weakness becomes a strength.

FRUSTRATION

Do you work for someone who frustrates you? Instead of telling you what to do or what they want directly, they beat around the bush or worse yet give you no ideas or path.

If you act on your own and it turns out the way they wanted then all is good. If not then they criticize you and say you should not have gone on without their input.

Some managers have assorted reasons for not directly delegating responsibility to others. They may think the person is not ready. They may fear, if the person is successful it may erode their own position in the company. Many managers live their careers cautiously, they avoid risks and hold tightly the strings of authority.

If you are frustrated with your manager, politely let them know that you would appreciate more input on what they want from you. Let them know that you are more than capable of being responsible for the task they want accomplished. Assure them if you have any questions or require their further advice or instruction you will ask for it.

These simple tactics will not only avoid frustration for yourself but more than likely for them.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF

In our Blog #311 on January 14, we extolled the importance of Friends.

Friends are important and vital. However, one needs to be able to Take Care of Yourself.

Our country consists of millions of families and friends. We work in thousands of different industries and occupations. Many families and friends live thousands of miles from each other. While they support each other as much as possible, ultimately you must rely on what you are able to produce.

With this in mind, you would expect that most people would be trying to produce more not less. In reality, that is not always true. People have become so confused by arguments over who is entitled to what that the big picture has become obscured.

Many workers over the years have cut back. Not only in the time they work but in how hard they are willing to work. Many want more things and more money for doing less and less.

While many have been grabbing for a bigger piece of the pie, the pie is not expanding fast enough. The best way to increase the size of everybody’s share and ultimately a bigger pie is logical.

If everyone works harder, then the pie will increase and everyone will have more.

FRIENDS

Image of friends

What is the description of friends?

Friends are people with whom you feel comfortable being yourself. They don’t ask you to pretend to be someone else or be better than your are. When you are with them, you are relaxed and easy going.

You can be frank and up front in your conversations. Although care should always be taken to not offend or abuse them. You can share personal thoughts and desires. They understand your occasional off the wall comments or if you are silent.

After all they are your friends.

PERSPECTIVE

When interacting with people, it is important to remember and realize the fact that everyone does not view things from the same perspective as you might.

Understanding someone’s viewpoint is the first step to effective and meaningful communication. Unfortunately in today’s world, the perspective of others is more too often overlooked and dismissed. Everyone should strive to reach middle ground on issues and or perceived differences of opinion.

Time and initiative should be taken to respect the perspective of others.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year

January 1st obviously ushers in a New Year. It’s a time that many reflect upon their previous accomplishments and failures. Then we look forward vowing to correct or not to repeat our failures. We also plot and plan for the time to come. Each of us has goals and aspirations. We should always strive to achieve them. If you are not moving forward, then it is inevitable that you will become stagnate or worse yet begin to move backwards.

So, after all that reflection, we usually come up with New Year Resolutions. They come in a variety of purposes, personal, family, business and community among them.

  1. Improve physical well being.
  2. Improve mental health.
  3. Improve finances.
  4. Improve career.
  5. Improve knowledge.
  6. Volunteer.
  7. Spend quality time with family and friends.
  8. Be more spiritual.

The following passage was written by Bishop John H. Vincent in 1909. It is appropriate not only on New Years Day but every day of our lives:

“I will this day try to live a simple, sincere and serene life. I will repel promptly every thought of discontent, anxiety, discouragement, impurity and self-seeking. I will cultivate cheerfulness, magnanimity, charity and the habit of silence. I will exercise economy in expenditure, carefulness in conversation, diligence in appointed service, fidelity to every trust and a child-like trust in God.”

MERRY CHRISTMAS

December 25th is celebrated as a religious (by a majority of Christians) and cultural holiday by billions of people around the world.

For Christians, it is marked as the day Jesus Christ was born in the town of Bethlehem.

Some believe Jesus was the Son of God or a prophet or others have no belief either way.

No matter what your beliefs are, take time to reflect upon the meaning of Christmas.

It is a time that promotes Peace on Earth and Goodwill to all.

May God bless you and your family.

Happy Holidays

The holidays have been in full swing this month. Many dates are celebrated or commemorated during this month. Naming a few, but certainly not all:

  • Kwanzaa: A celebration of Family, Community and Culture
  • Hanukkah: The celebration of the Jewish Festival of Lights
  • Christmas Day: The Christian culture commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ

However, even if you don’t practice or believe, they all have many points in common. The one we will focus on is that they all promote “Peace on Earth and Goodwill to all”. Once again, no matter what you practice or don’t, if you have not already done so, take a few moments to reflect on that common viewpoint.

BILL OF RIGHTS

The United States Constitution as of this writing has 27 amendments. December 15th is designated as the Bill of Rights Day. The Bill of Rights are the first 10 amendments to the Constitution of The United States and were written in 1791. Over the last few years, much attention has been called to some of the amendments. Some members of Congress have even stated "What would the Framers Say" and "It's an assault on our Democracy" when using the Constitution as an apparent defense of their OWN agendas.

The Framers were highly intelligent individuals. They also possessed tremendous foresight and therefore set out to prevent the Federal Government from controlling individuals and States' rights. It was designated that the powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively or to the people.

The following Amendments are some of those that are most often involved in Litigation. Therefore resulting in Judgments and or incarceration and potentially Appeals.

  • First Amendment - Freedom of Religion, Speech, Press, Assembly and Petition.
  • Second Amendment - Right to Bear Arms.
  • Fourth Amendment - Search and Seizure
  • Sixth Amendment - Criminal Prosecution-Jury Trials, Right to Confront and to Counsel.
  • Eighth Amendment - Excess Bail or Fines, Cruel and Unusual Punishment.
  • Tenth Amendment - Rights Reserved to States or People.

Our elected officials are tasked with upholding the Constitution. That said, it is very important to VOTE. That is the way we can protect our freedoms by electing like minded individuals. Those individuals should be our voice in Washington, D.C. not the voice of lobbyists or their OWN agendas.

That is what The Framers intended when they drafted The Bill of Rights.

Remember Pearl Harbor

That was the battle cry of WW II. President Roosevelt (FDR) said, "Sunday, December 7, 1941, a day that will live in infamy." Not many are alive who were there that fateful morning when the attack took place on our Pacific Fleet as it lay at anchor. Those who were there will never forget and others not there will never forget it or where they were when they heard the news.

As we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack, a thought comes to mind. Will "Remember Pearl Harbor," "Remember the Maine" and "Remember the Alamo" become forgotten or irrelevant? Will 9/11 succumb to the same fate? Not because those that were there or were aware of it are gone.

But because those events have been relegated to the back pages of History books or are routinely ignored by many schools as they "preach" not "teach."

Unfortunately, there has been a tremendous cost in the loss of lives in these tragic events. Thank God for our brave troops and first responders who have been involved in them. In this land of plenty and freedoms, with all of our problems, people still yearn to come to live here.

However, please remember "Freedom is not free."
