All of us appreciate a favor. In the service business, the majority of the time most of your customers are probably not known well enough to be considered a friend. However, that doesn’t mean they cannot be treated as you would a friend. A friend is normally someone you would do a favor for. Examples might be picking up their mail while they are out of town. Or meeting someone at their home who is going to be doing some work for them. So what kind of friendly favor can be done for your customers? Offer to clean an entry mat or small rug either outside the front door or one just inside at no charge. You can offer to come back and remove foam blocks and or furniture tabs, if you feel the customer might require assistance in doing so. Doing a friendly favor will help build relationships with your customers that will foster a feeling of friendship. Which will lead to additional business in the form of repeat customers and referrals. While you may not technically be a friend, you will gain a reputation as the Friendly Carpet Cleaner. NET WORTH
Most people think of Net Worth as being what a person or company is worth monetarily. However, Net Worth may also be associated with a purchase. When someone buys a low grade product or contracts a budget service, they may feel satisfied when they make their purchase. However, when they use the product or see the results of the service and those results do not live up to expectations, then they are displeased. They then see the value and thus the low Net Worth of their purchase. Conversely, when they buy a well made product or contract a high quality service and they see the results of that purchase and those results equal or exceed their expectations, then they are very pleased. Thus, this purchase has a high Net Worth. Since Net Worth can either be of little or no value or of immeasurable value always purchase or provide a product or service that is of high Net Worth. Standards
People judge leaders by the standards they set. It is so very important in running a business. If they don’t practice these standards themselves, it will be nearly impossible to expect their employees to practice them. Good leaders appreciate the fact that the power of a good example is one of their most powerful tools. This example will influence others far more than verbal advice or pontificating. The strengths and weaknesses of a company are most often than not reflected by the person who is in charge. If a leader is having difficulty getting people to measure up to the standards they insist upon, then perhaps they should look in a mirror. Are they practicing these standards wholeheartedly or are they just putting on a act? Related Articles and Information:Related Carpet Cleaning Business Articles and Information:

Ignored
No one likes to be ignored. Your employees need your attention for various reasons. How can you provide the attention they need which will make them feel better and work better? By noticing the work they do and complimenting them on improvement or continued good work. Also by pointing out to them how important they are to the company. Conversely, by noticing work that is not up to company standards and offering help to improve their work. By occasionally engaging them in conversations about their life, families and interests. By asking them to express their opinions and ideas about work situations they are familiar with. Finally and possibly most important is to listen when they bring up a personal problem. Often times you may not be able to help. However, just by the fact you are listening, you are letting them know they are not ignored. PRODUCTIVE MEETINGS
Productive meetings where good things get accomplished rarely just happen. They are well planned and executed and they require leadership and forethought for that to be accomplished. As obvious as this may seem, many people responsible for meetings continue to ignore these facts. They call meetings without visualizing what they want to accomplish. They have no plan and are not prepared. Is the meeting to solve a problem or problems? Then they should have a plan of action which will solve it or them. If the meeting is an informative presentation, then an outline should be handed out. If any other documents are needed to support the presentation, they too should be distributed at the outset of the meeting. If this is not done before-hand, then the meeting ends up being disorganized and a waste of time for everyone. Productive Meetings don’t just magically happen. They happen because those in charge of the meeting were well prepared and made the proper presentation. Labor Day
Labor Day is September 6th. It is a federal holiday which honors the American worker, who has added to the prosperity and well being of our country. Certainly, we as Carpet Cleaners fit into this classification. In 1887, Oregon became the first state to make Labor Day an official public holiday. By the time it became an official federal holiday in 1894, thirty states officially celebrated it. Labor Day has been labeled the “unofficial end of summer” because it marks the end of the cultural summer season. It is traditional for parades and picnics to be held in communities all across the country. Many fall activities also begin at this time. During the Labor Day weekend, the NCAA will have a full slate of football games. The NFL traditionally plays their kickoff game the Thursday after Labor Day. The Southern 500 NASCAR auto race is held at Darlington Raceway in Darlington, South Carolina. At Indianapolis Raceway Park, the NHRA hold their finals for the U.S. National Drag races. It is also the middle point between weeks one and two of the U.S. Open Tennis Championships held in Flushing Meadow, NY. Once again there are a plethora of National, State and Local activities that take place Labor Day Weekend. Wherever you are, whoever you are with, take time to acknowledge yourselves and the hard work you do and the fact that our small businesses are the backbone of our country. ADVICE
Have you ever thought about asking your customers for advice, opinions or help? If done sincerely, this is a way to strengthen your relationship with them. Just be sure your request is easy enough to fulfill and not an imposition. For example, don’t ask a Doctor about something bothering you and then go to someone else. The same holds true with lawyers, accountants and other professionals. What we are talking about, for example, is advice on buying a car, a restaurant for dining or something to help your golf game if you play. People generally like to give or share. It shows you respect their knowledge and opinion. We obviously cannot be expert in all fields. Also consider this, people may be wary of someone who appears to be too self-sufficient and possibly a know-it-all. Once again, the important thing is it must be done sincerely. Don’t use it as a gimmick or a come on. Must people will see right through you. Related Articles and Information:

WHY NOT
If a prospective customer tells you no, then ask them why not. While this may seem a bit brash, it should cause the prospect to explain why they said no. However, what happens if you have a prospect that basically just answers yes or no during your entire presentation. It’s difficult to know how you are doing. You can’t be sure what objections there may be or what advantages have been of importance. The best way to handle this type of prospect is to ask questions that will require more than a simple yes or no response, this will strategically involve the prospect into your presentation. Something to remember, if the conversation seems to lag because of the prospects short answers don’t rush through your presentation thinking you have to fill dead air. Be patient, after each major point of your presentation ask the prospect a question. Don’t ask them if they have any questions; that just gives them the chance to give short and noncommittal responses. Once again, you want to engage the prospect. By asking the right questions interwoven with your presentation, you should be able to avoid asking the prospect why not. They may say no, but you will at least know why. PRESCRIBE A CURE
In business, we can be similar to Doctors. Doctors have to diagnose a patient’s issue. Then they can prescribe a cure. This is where being a good salesperson comes into play. The first objective is to find out about the prospect’s needs. You need to know the services or products they will require. Also, the knowledge of how price conscious they are is important. Once armed with this information, you can proceed in offering the background story as it relates to you and your company. Whatever you say about yourself, your company or your products or services, say it in terms of the prospect’s wants, needs and problems. This way, your story becomes their story because it is about them. This and other information will allow you to present a proposal that is complete and accurate and therefore be able to prescribe a cure. FOLLOWUP
Does one of your competitors have an account you would like to have all sewn up? No matter how it seems, no customer-cleaner relationship is perfect. It happens to all of us, sooner or later something may happen to cause the customer to be dissatisfied. This is where followup comes into the picture. Your followup can consist of different strategies. Among these is sending information about your Company, the equipment and chemicals you use and the training and Certification your staff has attained. This information can either be dropped off or mailed. Then, if a situation arises and presuming you have regularly kept in contact with this customer, you may be the first one they think of regarding a change in Carpet Cleaning Service providers. The situation at first glance may seem hopeless but ponder this - a large number of business opportunities are lost due to a lack of followup. Related Articles and Information:

LOYALTY
Today, if you believe some people, loyalty between an employee and their company is strictly a matter of “What have they done for the company lately?” Or “Nothing else matters except what an employee is being paid.” But is this really true? Or instead of a lack of loyalty, is it just mere frustration? The frustration of owners or managers who feel employees do not have the best interests of the company at heart. Or is it the frustration of employees who feel that the company does not appreciate and value them? The key to loyalty is for both sides to deserve it. Both sides should be sincerely and genuinely interested in the present and in the future of the company and those who work for it. Both sides should appreciate the viewpoints and objectives of each other. Both sides should be open and honest and always deal fairly with each other. It takes all this and sometimes more to earn loyalty. But it can be achieved and it’s well worth the effort for all involved. Related Articles and Information:

LIFE IN AMERICA
There are many analogies of Life In America. For the purpose of this blog, America is going to viewed as a restaurant vs a cafeteria. In a restaurant, you go in and sit at a table and someone comes and takes your order and brings you what you ordered. In a cafeteria, you start at the beginning and pick out what you want and at the end you will find out what it costs. So, we prefer to say that Life In America is a cafeteria. You can get anything you want as long as you are willing to pay the price. You can even get success. But you’ll never get it, if you wait for someone to bring it to you. As in a cafeteria, you have to get up and get it. Thank you for reading Bane’s Blog® Please read the latest issue of the Clene-Times® at www.baneclene.com/publications/. LEADERSHIP
A common demonstration of leadership is to place a piece of string on a table. Pull it, and it’ll will follow you. Push it, and it goes nowhere at all. Leadership isn’t something that comes automatically just because you have people working for you. If people have to be forced to follow directions, then you are failing as a leader. Leadership depends on the ability to make people want to follow your instructions voluntarily. People who are successful leaders work to inspire their people to make them want to cooperate. Effective leaders realize that they receive the best efforts from their people by working with them and helping them do their best and be more productive. Most people want to do a good job as long as they feel appreciated. Good Leadership will be rewarded by your associates always trying to do their best. There might be a few who need to be watched and be reminded to get on the ball. The fewer is always the better. The need for little pushing usually indicates good leadership. IT IS HARD
It is hard: to forget, to apologize, to save money, to be unselfish, to avoid mistakes, to stay out of a rut, to start all over again, to make the best of all things, to keep your temper, to think first and act later, to maintain a high standard, to keep on keeping on, to take the blame, to be charitable, to admit an error, to take advice, to forgive and the list goes on.
But It Pays !!

INDEPENDENCE DAY
Obviously, Independence Day, the Fourth of July, is the day the United States commemorates its Declaration of Independence. The Continental Congress declared that the thirteen American colonies were no longer subject and subordinate to the monarch of Britain and were now united, free and independent states. This day historically has been marked by various activities. Among them parades, celebrations, baseball games, reunions and firework displays. With all that has happened over the past few months, some if not all of these aforementioned activities may not take place. We are facing trying times, times that will challenge the very fabric of America. We should not forget this fact, that this day marked the beginning of a long and bloody conflict to gain the Independence that our founding Fathers felt was so very important. It is what became the American Way of Life and what was so eloquently stated in The Constitution. The fact that not everyone agrees with what everyone else says is what makes America great. The fact that we are free to disagree, the fact that we are free to voice our opinion and the fact that we are free to live our lives as we see fit. As long as we do so with honor and respect of all others and within the confines of the law. So as you participate in whatever you have planned for this day, take a moment to be thankful for what you have and the fact that you live in The United States of America. God Bless America!!
